As the oldest child and only daughter of the successful Wolfenburg wine merchant Holden Gottsliebe, Dagmar had an early childhood to be envied: Tilian dresses every naming day, dwarf-made toys and private tutors from the Temple of Verena. Until her 9th year, she was the only child her parents had or wanted, and when her mother died that winter of Malochai’s Madness she and her father mourned for more than a year. When Holden returned to work, he found that his absence had almost bankrupted his trade. Casting about for a way to save the family business, he met Mathilde Mannsfeld, recently widowed heiress to a small fortune. Mathilde moved into the Gottsliebe household less than a month after meeting Dagmar’s father and was with child almost immediately. Holden and Mathilde went on to have six sons in 10 years. Fathering and raising so many sons has drained Holden’s vitality, in order to support such a large family he has taken to working long hours and sleeps most nights on a cot in the office in his warehouse – which is probably why Dagmar doesn’t have a 7th brother.

As is the custom in the northern reaches of the Empire, a man’s first son is expected to inherit his holdings; in order to spare her father the difficulty of explaining to his second wife and oldest boy that he wanted Dagmar to be his heir, she expressed great interest in continuing her studies in the way of Verena. This hasn’t been much of a burden for Dagmar as she was always fond of her tutors and spent more time reading books and exploring ruins than learning the wine trade. Saddened by the loss of his only connection to his first wife, but grateful for the easing of his own burden, Holden Gottsliebe donated a generous sum to Verena’s temple in Wolfenburg to ensure that his daughter would have adequate resources to live a comfortable life in the cloisters.

Dagmar has made other plans. After years of study and academic accomplishments in the girls school run by the Sisters of Verena, Dagmar has decided to take The Vows. As preparation for a life of learning, seeking the truth and shining Verena’s light in the shadows, the Abbess Hilde von Trappenfelder assigned Dagmar to represent the Temple in Wolfenburg society by working as a Clerk Investigator at the Wolfenburg City Hall. In her time in this role, Dagmar has made many connections in city and regional government and has become well versed in Law, History, Theology and Astronomy (a personal favourite). Her achievements have not gone un-noticed by the Abbess and as a final stage of her Initiate pledge, Dagmar is being encouraged to broaden her knowledge and experiences by traveling, meeting people and pushing back the veil of the unknown. So it begins…
